Ingesting the placenta is known as “placentophagy.” The benefits of placentaophagy by the birthing person can include:
- Reintroducing the beneficial vitamins, minerals, hormones, proteins, and other nutrients to the body following labor and birth to help restore and balance bodily functions
- Preventing or reducing the effects of “baby blues” and the more serious postpartum depression
- Increasing breast-milk production
- Shortening postpartum healing time
- Increasing maternal energy levels
- Providing an overall feeling of wellness to aid the transition between pregnancy and the early postpartum period in the person who has just given birth
Your placenta (in tincture form) can also be an effective remedy for the following future concerns:
- Premenstrual syndrome
- Menopausal symptoms
With the utmost respect and care for your baby’s placenta, I begin by separating the membranes and umbilical cord, then rinse and drain maternal and fetal blood, and finally dehydrate in order to grind and place the placenta into capsules for the birthing person to ingest.
I safely process your placenta according to OSHA blood-borne pathogens universal precautions and CA Food Safety and Handling standards. Your placenta will be cleaned, cooked (if desired), dehydrated, and put into pill and/or tincture form in a sanitary and disinfected work-space in my home kitchen.
Options and Fees
Receive 15% off when you book Placenta Encapsulation or Tincture with any of my doula packages.
Placenta Encapsulation – Your choice of:
Raw Method – $225
The raw encapsulation method is done without steaming and without the use of herbs. Your placenta will be dehydrated at 115 degrees. You may select either vegetarian or gelatin capsules to be used. This preparation yields a greater amount of capsules. This option is not available if you have tested positive for Group B Strep or have an active genital herpes outbreak.
Traditional Chinese Method – $250
The Traditional Chinese method consists of steaming the placenta with warming herbs (ginger, red chili flakes, lemongrass) and dehydrating at 160 degrees. According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, this method helps promote healing through warming the body. You may select either vegetarian or gelatin capsules to be used. This preparation yields fewer capsules. If you have tested positive for Group B Strep or have an active genital herpes outbreak, please select this option.
Placenta capsules can last up to six months in your refrigerator and an additional six months in your freezer.
Placenta Tincture – $225 or $75 if added to Encapsulation Service
A tincture is prepared by using a partial piece of raw or steamed maternal sided placenta and is stored in a high volume alcohol (vodka) for 6 weeks, followed by straining and storing in a dropper bottle of blackberry brandy (for flavoring).
Placenta tincture lasts a lifetime in a cool, dark cabinet or in your freezer.
Included in all service packages – free of charge to you – are a placenta print, an umbilical cord keepsake, and an emailed photograph of your placenta.
Upon the signing of your contract for placenta services, you’ll be given a detailed description of how to store your placenta safely until I’m able to pick it up. A non-refundable $50 retainer fee is due upon the signing of your contract, with the remaining balance due upon my pick-up of your placenta. Should you decide – for whatever reason – to cancel your placenta processing order before I begin processing your placenta, a full refund shall be issued. No refund shall be issued after the process has begun.
When I deliver your capsules and/or tincture to you, I’ll include specific instructions about dosage and storage, as well as some helpful hints and things to keep in mind when ingesting your placenta.
